W3C Contrast Research

Stimulus Size Experiments, August 2019

These are tests of different stimulus sizes and relative contrast for them. The contrast was aimed low deliberately, as it is easier to tell contrast differences between low contrast items rather than high contrast items.

The first three containers have a variety of text sizes on them. The text was adjusted visually using a standard sRGB laptop, so that all stimuli have approximately the same visual contrast perception & lightness. Notice that different text sizes are at different color settings, with smaller text requiring a significant boost in color or luminance contrast.

The HEX values are at the end of each line of text. You'll notice that for the dark text on white background, the contrast range is very wide. Using the WCAG 2.0 math, the "reported" range is only 1.91:1 for the largest text, but 7.45:1 for the smallest text and a whopping 11:1 for the thin (200) 16px text.

It should be noted that this very high contrast for the thin (200) small (16px) text is partly due to the contrast reduction caused by anti aliasing.

It might be tempting to jump to the conclusion that the contrast difference between the smallest and largest text is nearly four times higher — but remember that the WCAG math does not model human perception. The modified Weber Contrast only ranges from 82.7% to 45.7% - only 1.8 times higher (it was 87.6 for the small/thin). PCL and SAPC both indicate a little more than double the contrast.

In the reverse polarity, light text on dark background is a different story. WCAG is a narrower range of 1.6 to 2.8 (3 for thin/sm) but interestingly, the ModWeber still shows a an approximate factor of 1.8. SAPC and Delta L* are about 1.9x and PCL is a little over twice.

This may be a clue as to why the WCAG math reports so many false fails with reverse polarity. But be aware we are only discussing the contrast RANGE, that is, the factor between the largest and smallest stimuli contrast.

The third panel adds some color. The contrast ranges: WCAG 1.55:1 to 3.02 (3.9:1 for thin/small) and ModWeber 32.7% to 61.3% (68% thin/sm). The color background luminance here is 50.2Y or L* 76.2, the BG luminance of the first panel of course was 100Y (#FFF) and the second panels was 14Y (Y normalized for 0-100).

The Absolute contrast readings are all over the place for all methods. No method under current study was particularly balanced between positive and reverse polarity. This is the expected behavior, but looking at the data, it is conceivable that a more balanced solution may be possible.
